Description
Canadian. Quebec vernacular pine sideboard found in the Eastern Townships. Ca: 1870. Having two doors, each with two flat panels set within a chamfered frame. The case with a single interior shelf. Two upper drawers and three drawers across the base, each of nailed construction. Three-board top. Evidence of circular saw marks to backboards. Cast iron hinges and wooden knobs appear original. Old white paint over original red/brown finish. The tall, scalloped backboard with applied carving in the form of leafy tendrils terminating with thistles. The outer brackets on the top also with stylized leaf or fan carving. The case with applied scalloping under the top, quarter columns, vigorously shaped profile to base and with reeded applied, purely decorative “feet” in neo-classical style. 62 x 47 1/2 x 18 1/2".
