Description
An allegorical walking stick from North Bay with a great surface and carved details including hearts, dogs, a horse, a crescent moon, a tree of life, a wolf, a deer, and a hunter holding a gun. The carving is enhanced with original paint of brown, red, yellow and black under the original varnish. The carved shaft terminates in an octagonal shape with the original brass ferrule at the end while the joined handle is affixed with the original bolt. Normal wear providing an excellent patina; the leg of one animal is missing. Illustrated in Canadian Folk Art to 1950 by John Fleming and Michael Rowan, page 397 and 400. Ontario, 1870-80. L: 35" .
