Description
American. C. 1880-1920. General Store Lead Shot Counter Dispenser, likely manufactured by Dunscomb Dillingham of Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, U.S.A. This 8-slot, double window, 7-screw, two-drawer distinctive pattern was manufactured between 1880 and 1920 and would have rested on the counter of a General Goods or Gun Store. This particular example came out of Exeter Ontario, and may have belonged to a former store in the area. Very popular during the late 19th / early 20th Century in both the U.S.A. and Canada. Customers would dispense their lead shot of various gauges into cloth bags, at which point the store clerk would weigh the bags, and charge a price based on weight. The shot type offered for sale varied (depending on popularity), and each dispensing row could be filled with any desired gauge of shot. Includes three small canvas bags with makers mark “M. R. M. Co. Leadworks”, along with “5 lbs. Standard Shot.” Two of the bags are ink-stamped “Air Rifle” and one is marked “No. Five.” Also includes a #8 shot larger canvas bag, a small measure cap, and a funnel for filling the reservoir rows. The rear of the dispenser is marked “Patented.” Some rows still contain lead shot. A lovely and seldom-seen shot dispenser from a bygone era.
Condition
Condition is very fine, with a nice even finish overall, showing only minor dents and scuffs. One small repair to left side drawer pillar, showing some old wood glue. Nice “Patented” ink marking is crisp and clear at rear of dispenser. All 16 glass windows are intact. All 7 top cover screws present. All 8 shot dispensing levers and their safeties function, and remain undamaged.
