Description
American. 1958. The Mint Saloon at 220 Central Avenue, Great Falls, Montana was a favourite hangout of the turn of the century famous cowboy western artist Charles (Charlie) Marion Russell that boasted one of the largest exhibits of his original artworks. Russell, who lived in Great Falls from 1897 until his death in 1926, loved to visit the Mint often where he exchanged colourful stories with friends while enjoying the hospitality centred in the Mint's bar. By 1926, proprietor Sid Willis was displaying 90 of Russell's oil paintings, plus watercolours, drawings, models, sculptures, and ephemera in the Mint Saloon, having allowed Charlie to drink in exchange for his artwork. In 1947 the Mint's collection was offered to the town of Great Falls. When the town failed to act, the Mint owners brokered the collection to a New York Gallery in 1948 who sold it to Fort Worth, Texas Oil Baron, Amon Carter. Image title "Redskin Raiders" by Russell dated 1902. Marked, lower left with image.
