Description
American. 1920s. Single-sided embossed tin (SST). A rare embossed sign advertising 10 cent Popper's Ace brand cigars. The cigars were made by E. Popper & Co. Inc., cigar manufacturers located in New York, New York proper. During the 1920s, cigar manufacturing was a major business, second only to the garment industry. There were numerous small cigar tenements throughout the city, along with many cigar factories. The E. Popper company was one of the smaller manufacturers that was eventually boxed out by the larger cigar companies. According to New York government records, during the early 1900s, they speculated that the City of New York was making 10 times the number of cigars as Havana, Cuba. As a small company that lasted for a short time, any items advertising their products are scarce are rarely come to market. The sign is a nice depiction of the company's iconic logo of a biplane with cigar fuselage and moving propeller. A magnificent piece that would complement any tobacciana, aviation or advertising collection. Marked "S.J. Wolff, New York N.Y." at lower right edge. Authenticated by The Authentication Company (TAC #400695). All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
