Description
American. 1910s. Single-sided lithographed paper. Framed. An early advertising poster for Omar cigarettes, a brand introduced by The American Tobacco Company in 1911. In the early 1900s, Turkish and Egyptian cigarettes had infiltrated the American tobacco market, resulting in tripled sales and serious competition to leading American brands. The Omar brand was a significant response to the threat, ultimately amounting to increased demands, sales and profits for The American Tobacco Company. The cigarettes were named after Omar Khayyam, the Persian poet, philosopher and mathematician who was well-known and revered within the Persian Empire, of which Turkey was a part. The poster advertised the "blue package" cigarettes, which were used from the time the brand was first introduced in 1911. The image is of a beautiful Turkish woman in traditional headwear which, along with the carefully designed and balanced graphics, offers great visual appeal. Smokers were drawn to the packaging but also to the Turkish tobacco which was smooth, mild and trusted to be satisfying "Like The Word Of A Gentleman" as stated at the lower portion of the poster. The poster is original and in its original frame. It has not been examined out of the frame. An excellent example of early tobacciana. Frame is marked "Omar Turkish Blend Cigarettes" at lower edge. Both cigarette packages are marked "The American Tobacco Co." at their lower edge. All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
