Description
Canadian. 1950s. Lithographed tin. Donald Duck soft drinks were first developed in the 1940s as part of a licensing agreement between the Walt Disney Company and the Double Cola Company. Double Cola then authorized General Beverages Inc. of Chattanooga, Tennessee to produce the Donald Duck line, but it was not until 1952, at the American Bottlers of Carbonated Beverages Convention, that the Donald Duck line of products were officially introduced. The sodas featured Donald Duck's iconic image, with marketing targeted at children and families using Disney's popular branding to draw attention and lure consumers. Through a series of appearances, the product was heavily promoted by Clarence J. "Ducky" Nash, the original voice of Donald Duck, which proved to be off great success. Of interesting note, Donald Duck Cola was being marketed as being made with "the improved Pemberton formula". John Pemberton was the inventor of Coca-Cola, so the General Beverages company was essentially claiming to have improved Coca-Cola. With all of the makings of a juicy lawsuit, it is unknown whether Coca-Cola ever sued General Beverages for making this claim. With the success of Donald Duck Cola locally, General Beverages began introducing the product to the rest of the United States and Canada. The Donald Duck line of soft drinks were introduced in Canada in the mid 1950s. The product line was short-lived, in both the U.S.. and Canada, with General Beverages having their charter revoked in 1957 for non-payment of taxes. Being Canadian, this sign is rare, with Donald Duck Cola only being available in Canada for a few years. Very few Canadian versions have come to market and even fewer that are in original, untouched and very good condition. For graphics, subject matter and vibrant coloring, this sign would make an excellent addition to any Disney, advertising, Donald Duck, soda, tin signs or other general collection. Marked "Copyright Walt Disney Productions" to lower right of Donald Duck. Marked "Made in Canada - S.T.S.P." at lower right edge. Authenticated by The Authentication Company (TAC #400683). All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
