Description
A charming Ontario sampler dated 1848, drawn and executed by Agnes Wallace at eight years of age. In strong colours with multiple images and identified animals (note spelling of giraffe) surrounding a red brick Georgian house. Traces of pencil marking show that she planned the composition before beginning. Illustrated in "Folk Treasures of Historic Ontario" page 63, and "Canadian Folk Art" page 55, both authored by Michael Bird. Dated October 27th 1848. Note how Agnes ran out of room for the "th" so she placed it above the numeral. Marked, front.
Condition
Good condition with outstanding colour, some staining along the upper left quarter and the right edge. Appears to be original frame in combed paint.
Provenance
Folk Treasures of Historic Ontario Pg. 63, Canadian Folk Art, Michael Bird, Pg 55.
