Description
American. 1850s. A fabulous example of an early Bradley & Hubbard figural "blinker" or "winker", as they were sometimes known since their eyes moved. Bradley & Hubbard was a Connecticut based company that produced household items from 1852-1940. According to the Smithsonian Institution, the company was known for "its high quality and artistic merit" as evidenced by the unique blinking eye movement and substantial quality of workmanship. Many of the company's items are found in museums around the world and notable private collections. The blinking eye models are extremely rare primarily due to the fact that the original paper dials were easily damaged and often replaced, the clock mechanism only ran for 30 hours on a full wind and the eyes often stopped blinking (or moving) - all of which were accurate depictions for many mechanical items produced during that time. The clock offered here shows beautiful patina with original paper dial and original eyes. The clock mechanism has not been tested or examined out of the figure. This example shows a "patent applied for 1856" date. The patent was actually granted in 1857 making this clock the early and highly sought-after version, with later versions showing the 1857 patent date. Without question, an excellent example of a rare figural novelty item that would complement any collection. Embossed "Bradley & Hubbard Patent Applied For 1856" on underside of base.
