Description
The Canadian version of the American "Wooten" desk, this is an exceptional roll top office desk made in Preston Ontario by W. Stahlschmidt & Co. In walnut with burl panels and brass hardware, the kneehole appears to have a traditional door on each side, however, the entire side opens on a pivot to reveal multiple small cubby drawers on the left and slots for filing larger items and files on the right. William Stahlschmidt (1844-1928) attended school in Kitchener (Berlin) and eventually became principal of Preston Public School in 1868. It was there that he realized the quality of available school desks was very poor and launched his own company manufacturing desks for schools, banks, offices, etc. Very good overall condition with original hardware and brass plaque on the front edge, late 19th century. Plaque on front of desk reads "Manufactured by W. Stahlschmidt & Co. Preston, Ontario, Canada".
Condition
Repairs: Interior keepers for the roll top have been replaced (not visible when assembled). Trim on each side is replaced and the leather top. Small piece missing on the left pencil holder.
