Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. Second half, 1965. If one were to think about a single Maud Lewis image, her magical painting of Three Black Cats would certainly be top of mind. It is a subject that truly warms the heart and brings a smile to one's face. This image is also found in marmalade and white colours. Three black cats is a serial image only found in the 1960's. This example is exceptional; one likely dating to the last half of 1965. This same year she was featured on CBC Television and in a Toronto Star Weekly article with the headline: "The Little Old Lady Who Paints Pretty Pictures". Framed by vivacious branches of apple blossoms, the cats sit at attention in a bed of tulips. This is the magic of Maud Lewis. Three Black Cats is an image that will live on for decades as a quintessential image of not only Maud Lewis but of Canada's cultural identity. Signed, lower right, "Maud. Lewis". Includes signed letter of authenticity by Alan Deacon.
