Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1967. A serial image featuring oxen and a logging wagon in winter, before a perfectly balanced seascape. This is similar to the image featured on p. 61 of "The Illustrated Life of Maud Lewis", Collection of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Also similar to a work featured in Anne Newlands' book, "Canadian Art from its Beginning to 2000" published by Firefly in 2000. This was first time a Maud Lewis painting had appeared in a major book with other major Canadian artists. To quote Bernard Riordon Director of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia (AGNS): "Maud Lewis embodies the free spirit of folk artists working outside the mainstream, liberated from preconceived notions about art. By creating work that brings joy and reflects simplicity, she succeeds in illuminating the best of the human spirit." This is an superb example of an influential image by the matriarch of Canadian folk painting. Signed lower right, "Maud.Lewis". Includes signed letter of authenticity by Alan Deacon.
