Description
Canadian. 1919. A very rare calendar advertising Dominion Ammunition. The Dominion Cartridge Company began producing .22 caliber cartridges in the 1880s and up until WWII they were the only company producing .22s in Canada. Under the calendar pad is a detailed list of laws for each Canadian province with regards to open and closed seasons and limits for hunting "big game and fur-bearing animals". The illustrator, N.C. Wyeth, was one of America's most well-known illustrators. His masterpiece was the illustration of the book Treasure Island. His work was based in realism and was designed to be "understood quickly" (as evidenced by the illustration on this calendar, where it's obvious the men are secreted behind a large rock structure, moose hunting, with one using a moose call to lure his prey, and the other patiently waiting for the prey to enter his gun sight - no additional description required). While known primarily as a painter and illustrator of books, Wyeth also created illustrations for posters, calendars and advertisements for various companies, primarily in North America and including Dominion Cartridge. These calendars were given out annually as promotional items. Once the tear-off months have been used, the calendars were usually tossed in the trash, making any survivors rare and highly sought after. Marked, "Copyright, Canada, 1919, By Dominion Cartridge Company Limited Montreal", at lower left edge. Marked, "Designed, Engraved and Printed By The Herald Press and Advertising Agency Montreal and Toronto", at lower right edge. Signed, by illustrator "Newell Convers Wyeth", at lower right of image. All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for paid delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.

A significant closed tear extends from the middle right edge, diagonally and forks out where it meets the calendar - it has been reinforced from behind.
