Canadian. 1918. This original locomotive number plate holds a special story. It was originally attached to a 2-8-0 Consolidation (N-2-B) type locomotive, built by the Montreal Locomotive Works in 1918, which served with the Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR). This specific locomotive bore the boiler number 59444 and was scrapped in 1957. In 1923, when the Canadian Northern Railway was fully absorbed into Canadian National Railway (CNR, now CN) many locomotives were renumbered, but CNR retained CNoR's distinctive badge layout on their own plates. For some CNoR locomotives, no number reassignment was necessary, however the "NORTHERN" branding still had to be replaced with "NATIONAL". Typically, this meant recasting all plates. This plate, however, appears to have undergone an unusual field modification rather than a recast. The "NORTHERN" portion was carefully removed and a "NATIONAL" section was professionally welded in its place. In addition, there is evidence of repainting in order to achieve the signature CNR red and the reverse bears serial markings not commonly seen on recast CNR plates. These details strongly support the theory of a railside modification to keep the locomotive operational amid heavy demand for the Consolidation workhorses of the era. This number plate stands out as an authentic CNR plate modified for CNR service rather than recast. For collectors of rare locomotive plates and Canadian railway history, this is an historically significant find with unique appeal to enthusiasts of both Canadian Northern Railway and Canadian National Railway items.
