Description
Canadian. 1890s. George Tuckett (1835-1900) was a businessman and politician (he was once the mayor of Hamilton, Ontario). His life is a circuitous route of shuffling from shoe store entrepreneur, to glass-maker, to cigar maker. Throughout his life he bounced back and forth through all of these trades. He first made cigars in the 1850s, then quit to make plug tobacco, then made cigars again, then back to plug tobacco then finally and eventually ending in the cigar manufacturing business. In 1891, at a time when one of his sons had stepped into the business, Tucketts introduced the "Marguerite" cigar, a more expensive blend (at 10 cents) that became their best known brand. Marguerite was created by Italian artist Angelo Asti (1847-1903), who specialized in portraits of beautiful young women. He was considered the father of pin-up art, as his work appeared on the first risque calendars and postcards. All of his creations were named, with "Marguerite" eventually being used as the image for George Tucketts cigars. A beautifully crafted original piece of early tobacciana. Signed, "A. Asti", with artist's signature at lower right of image under the Tucketts shield. Authenticated by The Authentication Company. (TAC #400294). All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for paid delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
