Description
Canadian. 1893-1898. John W. Cowan was a merchant and manufacturer who began his business career as a "traveller" (better known as a salesman) for a wholesale tea dealer in Montreal. After 20 years of selling tea, Cowan moved to Toronto in 1876 and established a wholesale tea and coffee firm of John W. Cowan and Company. In 1893 Cowan diversified his business to include the cocoa and chocolate trade and changed the name of his company to "The Cowan Co. Limited Toronto" (as on this tin). We are able to date this tin between 1893 and 1898, as 1898 was the year Cowan adopted the maple leaf as a brand for his products, which does not appear on this tin. A great piece of Canadian general store history. Marked, "The Cowan Co. Limited Toronto", below the word "Coffee". Authenticated by The Authentication Company. (TAC #400263). All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for paid delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
