Description
Canadian. 1945. The Black Cat Cigarettes sign is considered to be one of the nicest looking signs in Canadian advertising sign history. The Black Cat brand was first introduced in the United Kingdom by Carreras Ltd. in 1904. The brand was named for a black cat that used to sleep in the window of the Carreras' street shop. Since the name "Carreras" seemed too difficult to pronounce, everyone referred to the store as the "black cat shop". In Canada, the Black Cat brand was manufactured by Rock City Tobacco in Quebec City. In 1936, Carreras Ltd. bought a controlling portion of the company, making Rock City Tobacco its Canadian subsidiary. This large sign retains a great look and will display well in any collection. Marked, "V.E.P. Ltd. Orillia Ont/45", at lower right. Authenticated by The Authentication Company. (TAC #400354). All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for paid delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
