Description
Canadian. 1890s. Traders Bank was one of the first chartered banks in Canada. Chartered banks often issued their own local bank notes as currency; however, when banks started to fail in the mid 1800s, confidence in bank notes also started to waiver and most chartered banks closed. In response, Traders Bank developed a unique program that involved this coin bank. It was designed by Traders Bank Inspector Aemilius Jarvis (the name embossed on the roof of the bank) and was modelled after the bank's head office located at Yonge St. and Colborne St. in Toronto. Approximately 1500 of these banks were made as a promotion (and to encourage families to save money). They would be dropped off at the homes of account holders, where family members would deposit coins in the slots along the roofline. When the bank was full, the account holder would return it to the bank, where only an authorized bank employee could unlock it and then deposit the money to the customer's account. When the program was terminated (mere months after it began), most of the banks were either scrapped or sold off for $1 apiece. Few survived, making these banks rare, hard-to-find collectibles and true pieces of Canadian history. Marked, "Property of The Traders Bank of Canada Registered by A.E. Jarvis 1891 The Traders Bank Sole Licensee". Embossed, "The Traders Bank of Canada Colborne St", on one side. Embossed, "Colborne St", on opposite side and "Traders Bank Yonge St", on both ends. All items are guaranteed authentic by Miller & Miller Auctions. All purchases are eligible for paid delivery to the Spring Dixie Gas & Oil Show on April 10-12 2025.
