Description
Canadian. Late 19th Century. An important part of many early advertisements is the issue of patriotism. This poster serves as a notable example of using that emotion to sell farming equipment. A British farmer is shown satisfied with his Massey-Harris equipment while Uncle Sam, on bended knee, is unable to convince him otherwise. As if to further drive home the point, the viewer notes a pile of sales literature under the heel of the farmer's boot marked plainly "Yankee Machine Catalogues". Vivid colouration draws the eye to the critical elements of the piece and the intended audience is forced to conclude that buying American would simply be unpatriotic. This a fine example of an advertising campaign unabashedly leveraging human emotion to sell products and an interesting study of 19th-century advertising campaigns. Marked, "Toronto Lithographing Co".
