Description
American. 1920s. Larger boat was made by the Lindstrom Toy Company, who made quality tin windup toys until WWII when they went out of business. This is the rarer version of several different variations of boats because it has a driver and seating compartment rather than a covered engine, making it more desirable amongst collectors. The smaller boat was made by Ferdinand Strauss, who was known for a number of things including his start as a maker of inexpensive toys, an employer of future toy magnate Louis Marx (who eventually purchased Strauss' company and finally as "the founder of the mechanical toy industry in America". Marked, "Lindstrom", at rear deck behind driver of larger boat. Marked, "Made in U.S.A." at rear right below deckline. Marked, "The Ferdinand Strauss Corp. New York, U.S.A.", at rear deck behind driver of smaller boat.
Condition
Larger boat (Lindstrom) is in fair condition. Original driver. Clockwork outboard motor untested. Winding mechanism and motor covers are missing. Boat deck shows significant oxidation blemishes. Significant scratch on right side and indentation on left side. Smaller boat (Strauss) is in very good condition. Windup mechanism tested and working. Minor playwear. Rust along top edge and underside. Paint colour is vibrant.
Medium
Lithographed tin.
