Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1960-1961. The end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s brought a change in the size of Maud's paintings. Her 9" x 12" images that dominated the 1950s changed in favour of larger images like this one. Like so many of Maud's Winter scenes, this bustling serial image depicting women in hoop skirts and muffs and men in towering top hats is reminiscent of mid-nineteenth century Canada. It pops with colour yet the admirer is easily mesmerized by its simplicity. Train Station in Winter is one of very few serial images that spans three decades. However, the sleigh and horses Maud includes in the foreground puts this work in a special class. Also, she shares seven legs between two horses and somehow gets away with it. This is the magic of Maud Lewis. Signed lower right, "Lewis".
