Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1967. Two Oxen in Winter is one of Maud's few serial images that spans three decades. Here, vibrant evergreen conifers frame two of Maud's adored creatures: the oxen. Each beast 'pops' amid a snowy Nova Scotia winter. This image hearkens to Lewis' childhood when teams of oxen tilled the land and pulled logs and other materials over the long and winding roads of Nova Scotia. Signed, "Maud. Lewis", lower right. Signed, "G.D. Palfrey", on reverse.
Condition
Very good original condition. General age-related toning with foxing in some areas. The colours are vibrant and well-balanced.
Medium
Oil on beaverboard.
Provenance
Single-family owned. Purchased directly from the artist. Remarks from current owner: "I can remember as a little girl going with my father into Maud's house and meeting her. I saw a very quiet lady in the corner painting wondering to myself how she was doing this because her hands were so crippled. Inside the house everything was painted. My father bought two paintings at the time and paid $5 each. My father signed the back G.D. Palfrey".
