ARTIST
Félicien Levesque (1916-1997) was a sculptor based in Cacouna, Québec. Cacouna is located on the lower St. Lawrence shore of Québec. Levesque was a primitive artist who made painted carvings of birds, animals and people in everyday situations. He also created dioramas of life and situations that occurred along the shore, including ferry boats that serviced the islands, shipwrecks, among others. His sculptures were often full of people and activity, and they were sometimes electrified to light up, or even to be motorized. He worked with 'as found' materials, often using real or synthetic hair. His subjects' eyes were always very boldly carved and/or painted in. His carvings, often unsigned, are easily identified.

Description
Cacouna, Quebec. Last quarter 20th century. Look up, look way up, seems to be what this long-necked goose is suggesting. Created from a single piece of found wood by Félicien Lévesque, this piece embodies Lévesque’s primitive style. His work is known for its honesty, directness, and powerful presence. Although often unsigned (as is this piece), his carvings are easily identified. Carved and painted wood with red-topped pins used for eyes, as he often did.

Good condition. Age crack through midsection of body.
