Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1940s. This 1940s work titled 'The Gap, Digby N.S." belongs in the ranks of Maud's earliest and best works. The paint is thick, the detail explicit, and the colours strong and typical of her earliest works. This work is likely a 'one-off'. Maud Lewis seldom titled her works, making this example exceptionally rare. A handful of other early titled works are known with comparable script (see the McMichael Exhibition Catalogue "Paintings for Sale" by Sarah Milroy p.24). In this case "The Gap" refers to the Digby Gut which is a break in the ridge called the North Mountain. The passenger ferry sails through "The Gap" from Digby to St John NB. The signature M. Lewis is the rarest of Maud's three signatures. Signed, "M. Lewis", lower right. Titled, "The Gap, Digby, N.S.", lower centre. Labelled, "Manuge Galleries", on reverse. Marked, "545/E", on reverse.
Condition
Good condition. Two tack perforations at the upper corners, each surrounded by the tack head imprint and minor paint flaking. The paint is vibrant and nicely crazed in areas.
Medium
Oil on beaverboard.
Provenance
Purchased from Manuge Gallery (late 1970s). By descent to present Private Collection. A letter of authenticity signed by Alan Deacon accompanies this work.
