Description
Canadian. Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1950s. A rare, unusual and possibly unique Maud Lewis image depicting men working on a wharf with lobster traps and colourful buoys in the foreground. This work is alive with the thick paint and bold colours typical of her earlier works. One can almost imagine the sense of purpose, as each man performs his task. This action gives this work great distinction. Signed lower right, "Lewis".
Condition
Good original condition. The upper edge of the board has been slightly reduced to fit into the frame. The surface exhibits some oxidation and toning, but colours are bold and rich. Minor flaking to painted edges, particularly the upper corners.
Medium
Oil on beaverboard.
Provenance
Single-family owned. Purchased directly from the artist. A letter of authenticity signed by Alan Deacon accompanies this work.
