Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1962-1963. In this rare serial image, Maud depicts the Digby Ferry coming through the Digby Gut into the Annapolis Basin. Lewis took this vantage point from Smith's Cove, Digby County. Here she depicts a large white house; possibly the Hedley House or Penny Gott's Inn. A similar image is featured in the McMichael Exhibition Catalogue "Paintings for Sale" by Sarah Milroy (p.33). Smith's Cove is less than a five minute drive from Maud's house in Marshalltown. The first Digby to St John ferry made to carry automobiles was the Princess Helene. Made in Scotland, it sailed for the CPR from 1930 until April 1963 when the ferry was replaced by the Princess of Acadia. Signed, "Lewis", lower right.
Condition
Good condition. The painting shows some toning and foxing, particularly in the blue areas. The upper corners and lower right corner show wear from mild impact with some paint loss. The board has a shallow bend. The reverse side has an old hanging ring crudely attached with tape.
Medium
Oil on beaverboard.
Provenance
Single-family owned. Purchased directly from the artist. A letter of authenticity signed by Alan Deacon accompanies this work.
