ARTIST
Eli Whiteway (1914-1987) was a sculptor from Shelburne, Nova Scotia. He took over his father's shoemaking business and later opened "Eli's Store," a general store in Shelburne. Eli began carving as a young boy, creating pieces for his yard and souvenirs to sell in his store. His work includes original and decorative carvings of animals, people, and three-dimensional paintings and assemblages. In 1976, Eli was one of 22 artists selected to participate in "Folk Art of Nova Scotia," the first exhibition of contemporary Nova Scotia folk art organized by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. This exhibition toured Canada from January 1977 to May 1978.

Description
Shelburne, Nova Scotia. Last quarter 20th century. Eli Whiteway is best known for his carvings of flowers and animals, and dioramas of life. This is a rare example of a raised image of a bird applied to a painted landscape background. Dramatic and colourful. Similar form to the example on page 61 of Ray Cronin's, "Nova Scotia Folk Art, An Illustrated Guide." Signed, "Eli Whiteway," lower right.
