Description
A sheet iron mermaid weathervane from Oka, Quebec, in a wonderful, dry, original painted surface. The vane is mounted on the original wrought iron post and a wooden block that appears to be part of its original mooring. There is a local legend about a mermaid in the Lake of Two Mountains Quebec, near where this weathervane was found. Illustrated in "Folk Art. Primitive and Naive Art in Canada" by Blake McKendry page 55. Good surface on both sides and is in very good condition with some expected wear at the swivel point. Ex collection Blake and Ruth McKendry. Mid-19th century.
Provenance
From the Wendy B. Hamilton and late Bill Hamilton Lifetime Collection.
