Description
A pair of half-body framed decoy plaques in original paint by Alain de Lotbinière Macdonald (1886-1961) of Rigaud, Quebec. The ducks (Bluebill drake and Redhead drake) are finely carved and mounted on a painted naturalistic background. After serving in WWI, Macdonald worked at the Robin Shoe Last factory where he was in charge of adapting the lathes to also produce decoys for a growing market. In 1931 he moved to Rigaud where he carved his own decoys, including plaques like these, that he sold in his Montreal and Rigaud studios. The Bluebill is signed "A. de L. Macdonald" on the back. Quebec, 2nd quarter 20th century.
Condition
Very good condition. A few scratches. The duck carvings are near mint in original paint and structurally excellent. The painted backgrounds are bright and clean. Edge wear on painted frames.
