Description
Sculpture of a draft horse pulling a log sled in winter, carved by Ellen Trygg, mounted on the original painted base. Incised "Trygg" in her manner on the side of the base and inscribed in ink underneath "Hand Carved by E. Trygg Herrala". The Trygg family emigrated to Canada in 1928 from Sweden with the arrival of Carl Johan Trygg and then his family shortly after. Trygg carvings are well known for their caricatures and quality flat-plane carving technique. Ellen Trygg, a relative of Carl Johan, emigrated to Canada about the same time and carved in the same style, painting her sculptures in bright vibrant colours. Her works are not common and signed examples of her work are considered rare. St Sauveur, Quebec, mid-20th century.
