Description
American. C. 1880. Made by Ives, Blakeslee & Company, Bridgeport Connecticut, the Pegasus Locomotive is considered by many collectors to be the finest mechanical locomotive without track ever produced. The advanced design includes a train engineer with a moving arm to ring the bell. Other features include a flaring diamond smoke stack, a gilt steam engine and a track light. The locomotive is painted red, yellow, blue, green and black, a colour combination very appealing to the eye. The Pegasus locomotive was years ahead of its time and has been featured in a variety of toy publications, including American Antique Toys by Bernard Barenholtz and Inez McClintock and in some of the world's best known toy collections. Its superior quality design and rarity make it one of the most coveted of toy trains. Marked, "Pegasus", on both sides of the conductor car. Marked, "PATN", faintly on upper right side of conductor car.
Condition
Very good condition. Untouched, complete, and original. Shows some flaking to paint on top. One painted tin bracket is present but separated from train. Smoke stack has separated at the seam and is detached. Stencilling is very strong. Key wind mechanism is complete but has not been tested. Wire that connects the conductor to the spring driven axle requires soldering in order for the conductor to activate the bell. End of one piston has separated. Requires front light head assembly.
Medium
Tinplate with cast wheels.
