Description
Canadian. 1915-1918. A rare, hard-to-find WW1 poster, depicting a torch-bearing angel illuminating a Canadian soldier carrying a Union Jack (the national flag of Canada until it was replaced in 1965 with the red maple leaf) and a happy labourer holding a mallet. The quote at the top left is inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields", within a verse that was often used as inspiration for furthering the war effort. The artist, Frank Lucien Nicolet, was born in England and immigrated to Canada where he painted several images promoting the sale of Victory Bonds. Marked, "W.P.I.", at lower left. Signed, by illustrator, Frank Lucien Nicolet, at left above the word "BUY".
Condition
Very good- excellent restored condition and canvas backed. Horizontal creases to upper left quarter (see beneath script and above flagpole finial). Minor blending to scuffs in lower right quarter particularly the 'Y BON'.
Medium
Lithograph on paper.
