Description
Napanee, Ontario. Late 1850s to early 1860s. John S. Edgar was noted as a chemist and druggist on Dundas Street in Napanee in the 1857/58 Canada Directory and again in the early 1860s, and the scant few jugs and crocks bearing his name that are known to exist suggest he offered a general product line as well. This is a scarce mark and the elaborate Tree-of-Life decoration fills the entire front. Made at the Skinner/Picton pottery. Stamped, "J.S. Edgar / Druggist. / Napanee CW. / 1".
Condition
Darker toning due to overfiring in the kiln. Slight indentation at the front towards bottom. 1" chip left side of spout. Tight crack front left at base, 3.5". Kiln furniture touch at right side.
Medium
Salt-glazed stoneware.
Provenance
From the Jon Church Collection.
