Description
American. 1920s. An exceptional example of early American pre-neon advertising. This imposing lighted sign features stamped tin architectural details at two opposing corners and a crown along the top edge of each side. The sign is bordered by a mottled yellow-green paint that simulates the appearance of the linoleum floorcloths they would have sold. Early lighted signs with milk glass represent some of the most important North American advertising treasures. Due to their inherently large and fragile nature, very few good examples have survived. Marked, "Kolite Electric, Schenectady, NY", lower centre.
Condition
The original dry surface remains remarkably intact with a streak of light surface losses passing through the center of one side. The original wiring remains in place and functioning, although it should be replaced if the sign were to be displayed lit. Missing "S".
Medium
Double-sided painted galvanized steel with milk glass (opal) red glass letters.
