Description
Ancaster, Ontario. Late 1920s. Hundreds of painstaking hours of craftsmanship resulted in this unique early 20th-century trade sign originally from a Ford-Essex Garage in Ancaster, Ontario, Canada (see photograph). The car depicted is likely modeled after a Ford or Essex of the period, and remains a three-dimensional icon of automotive history. Strategically placed internal light bulbs illuminate the milk glass or "opal" letters. Fine details such as the windshield visor, radiator ornament, headlights and rear-mounted spare tire distinguish this sign. Two identical sides are secured to the core with hundreds of machine screws. Bulbs are replaced through hinged access doors in an "A" and "G" on one side only. Early lighted signs with milk glass represent some of the most important North American treasures in advertising. Their inherently large and fragile nature suggests why so few have survived. This is an outstanding example of a great identity.
Condition
In all original as found condition. One of the "G's" shows an old crack through the lower left. An "E" shows a 1 1/2" chip from the top inside edge. One "R" was professionally replicated using the remaining "R" as a pattern. The yellow surface remains in old, "in service" paint. A stable peppering of old black paint remains over the bare, slightly oxidized galvanized sheet metal. The paint on the yellow body sections and white tires is bonded to the steel. Original knob and tube wiring is in place and functioning but should be rewired if the sign is to be displayed lit.
Medium
Double-sided painted galvanized sheet metal with milk (opal) glass letters.
Provenance
The sign depicts a Model A Ford and was made for a Ford-Essex Garage in Ancaster, Ontario. A photograph taken around 1928 shows the sign on the garage.
