Description
Canadian. Poster: C. 1955. Frame: Between 1891 and 1915. This classic Canadian Pacific Lithograph was created to advertise the opening of a domed car route through Canada. Domed cars allowed unprecedented views for picturesque routes, and the Park-series dome cars would have been the first opportunity for many Canadians to ride in such style, albeit at a premium price. This piece features a noteworthy frame, emblazoned with "Canadian Pacific Steamships" dating to approximately the end of the 19th century. Hardware on reverse consistent with frames in regular station use for quick exchange of various marketing materials, timetables, and billboards. Though certainly, the displayed lithograph is not the first poster displayed in this frame over the many years of service in the Cavan, ON station, it is simply good fortune that such an iconic Canadian Pacific poster was the last one placed inside to tempt the viewing public into purchasing a ticket. Marked, "R. Couillard", in right margin, "T-1608", in lower-left, "Litho. in Canada", in lower-right. Stamped, "Framed Phillips Toronto Ltd, Toronto", on reverse.
Condition
Very good condition. Minor dings to the frame are consistent with age and regular station use. Mild abrasion and colour loss on the lower-right edge. Mild foxing/staining upper margin and upper-right corner.
Medium
Paper.
Provenance
Used at C.P. Station, Cavan, ON. Provided to Mrs A.L. Brown via C.P. authorization letter dated 1978 (included).
