Description
British. Pre 1905. The clasped hands fire mark was used by Hand-in-Hand Insurance, one of the oldest of all British insurance companies. The number 80585 represented the policy number. Fire marks were issued by some insurance companies to policyholders to signify that their property was insured against fire damage. Fire marks would then be affixed to the home or business and serve as proof of insurance and as a deterrent against arson. The company was sold in 1905 and its name changed at that time, making this firemark pre-1905.
