Description
American. 1850-1900. Some insurance companies issued fire marks to policyholders to signify that their property was insured against fire damage. The firemark would have the name of the insurer (in this case the "Firemen's Insurance Co."). These would then be affixed to the home or business and serve as proof of insurance and as a deterrent against arson. Marked, with Maker's casting mark in lower rear quarter.
