Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. C. 1968. Two Oxen in Winter is a serial image that spans three decades. Lewis drew on her childhood experiences to create such adorable ‘beasts of burden’ in this winter scene. With their enticing eyes, the oxen evoke an undeniable ‘draw’ to the admirer as well. Signed lower right, "Maud. Lewis".
Condition
Scattered scratches and nicks are most evident on the brown areas of the oxen and tree trunks. The signature is faint and signed in marker. Wear with minor loss to the upper right corner. Colour contrast is visible at the extreme edges from the frame. There is a paint flake, the size of a pinhead, to the edge of the right most hind leg.
Medium
Mixed media on masonite.
Provenance
Purchased from descendant of the original owner. A letter of provenance is available upon request.
