Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1965-7. A version of this quintessential Maud Lewis scene was chosen by Canada Post for a 2020 Christmas stamp. Covered Bridge in Winter is a serial image found in many variations only in the 1960s. This work shows three differently coloured sleighs. The snow-laden evergreens with their signature blue loops combined with the novel covered bridge add strong and interesting focal points. The painting is mixed media on pulpboard (beaver board). Signed "Maud. Lewis" at lower right.
Condition
In good overall condition. The brown rooftops, horses, and fence show minor scratches and nicks with surface loss. Impact with wear to the upper right corner. Modest discolouration and tonig, particularly to the white background.
Medium
Mixed media on pulpboard (beaver board).
Provenance
Purchased directly from the artist by a descendent of the owner.
