ARTIST
Cyril Hirtle (1918-2003) was a painter from Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia where he lived his entire life. Hirtle began painting around 1990 when he was in his early 70s. His paintings are recognizable for their lack of perspective, and consist primarily of fishing and farming scenes. Although he has become one of Nova Scotia's most highly regarded folk artists, Cyril was not very prolific, and in his most productive year completed only 15 paintings. It is estimated that his entire body of work totals fewer than 100 paintings.

Hirtles Beach, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. Late 20th century. Hirtle's unique vision and painting style sets him apart from his contemporaries, which is evident in this delightful composition featuring a sailboat and seagulls, with an island with a lighthouse and hut on the horizon. Signed " Cyril Hirtle" in pencil on the lower right edge beneath red post in water.

Excellent condition. Canvas shows minor coggling.
