ARTIST

Albert Deroy (1916-2004) was a Gaspé, Québec-based sculptor, woodcarver and painter known for his bird carvings and whirligig sculptures. When a car accident forced his retirement from mill work, Deroy discovered his artistic urge after finding himself inspired by a book about a bird carver. He decided to begin creating his own bird carvings, and gradually evolved the skill to include boats, windmills, whirligigs and character sculptures. He worked principally with 'as found' materials such as driftwood, lumber, metal and tin. His works were often painted in bright primary colours in imaginative schemes. Deroy was first written about in ‘Les Patenteux du Québec’ and his work has become widely collected in museums and private collections.

Price, Gaspe, Quebec. C. 1960. A striking rendering of a standing goose (marked "Outarde" which translates to "goose" in English). In shiny black and white paint and mounted to a slightly domed base with inset shells and rocks. Albert Deroy is a highly regarded folk artist from Price, Gaspe, Quebec who filled his yard with boats and whirligigs, windmills and cut-out, painted figures of people. His palette was always bright primary colours and his colour schemes were always imaginary. He was first written about in ‘Les Patenteux du Quebec’ (the "Bible" for Quebec folk art) and became widely collected in museums and in private collections. Marked "Outarde" on underside of base.
