Southey, Saskatchewan. C. 1990. Cute is the word that best describes this mama pig and her five little piglets, carved by the noted Southey, Saskatchewan carver George Markel (1910-2006). it's the little glass eyes that do it. George Markel farmed in rural Saskatchewan before moving to Regina to work. He retired and moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta where he began carving sculptures showing rural life on the farm. His favorite subjects were Horses and Pigs. Unsigned, as is much of his work.
