Description
An 18th century Quebec armoire with a high double-paneled frieze balanced by an elevated scrolled and incised base with bold cabriole feet. Illustrated in The Early Furniture of French Canada by Jean Palardy, plate 72, the armoire doors and sides have panels in a transitional Louis XIV/XV style along with a paneled centre stile. The back is constructed with fitted planks affixed with rosehead nails. Robust construction with original forged hinges, lock and escutcheon. Warm pine patina, refinished in the 1950s, re-pegged, minor loss to left cornice, shelves replaced. Ex collection Mr and Mrs Fred Mulligan (Palardy 1963) descended to Peter and Lois Mulligan. Provenance: Saint-Jude, Quebec, late 18th century.
