Description
A historical pair of oil portraits of Brantford potter W.E. Welding (1819-1903) by Fanny Colwill Calvert (1848-1936), Guelph, Ontario. Entitled "The Brantford Man Asleep" and "The Brantford Man Awake", the portraits were painted close to the end of Welding's life after a long career as a potter and businessman during the height of Ontario stoneware production in the last half of the 19th century. Illustrated in "The Diary of Fanny Colville Calvert", page 62, and "The Potter's Reach" by Moe Johnson, page 384. In original frames, signed on the back "Mrs Calvert, 68 Queen St., Guelph".
