Description
A hooked rug by Louise Belbin (1897-1999), Grand Banks, Newfoundland, with a ship's wheel and compass star between two spouting whales, all on a light blue background. The central design is surrounded by a rope motif border that loops around a red star in each corner, all on a black background. The wife of a sea captain, Louise became a rug hooker in her spare time after all her other daily responsibilities. A video of Louise explaining her rug hooking techniques was produced by Memorial University in 1978. The rug is in good condition, mounted on a bar for hanging. Newfoundland, mid 20th century.
