Description
A vernacular Queen Anne/Chippendale mirror from Ayers Cliff, Quebec, having double hearts cut in the elaborate scrolled and pierced crest. The back is cut from a solid pine board and a substantial molded frame surrounds the original mirror above a scrolled apron with spurs and curled returns. All in an original faux mahogany red surface. The region around Ayers Cliff was settled by many United Empire Loyalists following the American Revolution and these "roots" can be found in local architecture and furnishings. The double hearts suggest it was likely made as a courting or wedding gift. Illustrated in "Folk Art" by Blake McKendry, plate 236. Very good condition, tip of left curl on the apron restored. Quebec, 1790-1820.
Provenance
From the Collection of Steve Blevins and Sonja Morawetz.
