Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1967-1968. The bustling train station was a big part of Maud's childhood. Upon her mother's death and the foreclosure of her family's home in Yarmouth, Maud's childhood came to an abrupt end. In 1937, she boarded the train to Marshalltown, where she would live for the rest of her life. In this work, Maud's ethereal vision of two horse-drawn sleighs in winter are by the industrial smokestack of a new world locomotive. This important image represents the contrast in Maud's life from her childhood years in Yarmouth to her brave new beginnings in Marshalltown. Train Station is a serial image that spans two decades. The whites used in this example are very typical of Maud's work. Signed, "Maud. Lewis", lower right.
