Nova Scotia. 1977. A delightfully simple rendering by Nova Scotia master folk artist Joe Sleep of a deer in orangey-yellow with a yellow band around its neck standing on a darker green mound. A nearby whimsical tree is painted in mint green with black branches. The matte is painted turquoise while the frame is decorated with leaves and flowers in a variety of fall colours. Joseph Sleep grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick. Work by him is included in the collections of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Dalhousie University Art Gallery, National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of History. Signed and dated, on front.
