Description
Marshalltown, Nova Scotia. 1965. A naive winter scene in which a pair of winter sleighs race across a covered bridge. Bright colours abound on the main buildings against white snow. A variety of trees in green and brown complete the composition. She uses wonderful loops of blue around the trees to illuminate them by the light of day. Maud's intent was to brighten lives and warm hearts with winter scenes like this one. This is a common serial image painted only in the last 10 years of her life. Even though they may be viewed as similar in context, the inconsistency of her renderings makes each one individual and charming; a hallmark of her style. Signed, "Maud Lewis", lower right corner.
